We just got this down comforter. The quality is very nice. We had an Eddie Bauer one that lasted us for years (until my unfortunate decision to try to launder it at home destroyed it!), and I would say that this one is just as well made and I love that it is gusseted. Our EB one cost us roughly $175 on sale, so this one is a little cheaper comparatively — I looked very seriously at purchasing of the REALLY cheap options, but I decided that once I factored in the amount of use this comforter would be receiving (and the very true adage of you get what you pay for), this one seemed like the smarter buy. The panels aren’t as full of weathers as I was hoping, but my expectations might be too high — I don’t know how many feathers you can stuff in to these things safely! |

Choose a good comforter
Good comforted will help you fall in a deep sleep in no time … But finding the model that will suit you is not always easy. Read our advice to get find your perfect down comforter.
A comforter has many advantages. First, it is warm in winter and cool in summer. To make your bed in the morning you simply have to shake it. And with a new comforter, you certainly won’t need to pile more and more blankets on the bed! Buying a down comforter specifically can be more complex. There are dozens of models, from the low $200 polyester quilt to the high-end $2000 made of eider duck down. You need to choose based on specific features you like, but also based on your budget. Here are some tips to help you find your comforter set.
Start with measurements. Measurement are taken to ensure that the quilt will fit the bed in size (American and European models do not have the same standards, sizes may differ from one country to another). It is important to find out ahead whether your comforter will fit your bed because, for hygienic reasons, many businesses refuse to exchange a quilt.
Down comforter sets. Down comforter sets are the most comfortable comforters because down allows a good air circulation and absorbs moisture. If the sleeper sweats, he will remain dry and comfortable. In addition, down comforter sets retain three times more heat per ounce than synthetic products. Because of the elasticity of down comforter sets, you can simply compress the quilt and shake to inflate it again. To judge the quality of down comforter set, check the following:
1) The type of down used in the down comforter sets. Duck down or goose down are the most common. Connoisseurs swear by goose down. The reason for it is that larger birds produce the best down. Hence, adult geese are much larger than ducks. Other down comforter sets use eider down, a specie of a large duck from the North. Eider is an endangered specie, therefore the down is harvested by hand in the nests and sold at a very expensive price. This is why eider down comforter sets are among the most expensive ones (about $2000 for a queen size bed (large). Down comforter sets that are labeled “100% down” on the packaging are most likely not made with goose down or eider down. Because goose down and eider down are more expensive than duck down, manufacturers will make sure to indicate goose or eider it on the labels of down comforter sets.
2) The origin of the down. Down comforter sets made in China are known to be made with the down of young birds, therefore with a much poorer down quality. That down does not inflate and has a low insulation capacity compared to the adult down. Moreover, young birds down filaments can sometimes be fragile quickly break. This is why some goose down comforter sets can cost as little as $150. Opt for down comforter sets made in Europe or Canada, as their quality is is usually better and your down comforter set will last you longer. You can usually find what country down comforter sets come from. If not specified on the packaging of the down comforter set, simply ask the seller.

July 26th, 2009
Fill power is a guide that allows you to determine how warm and how well the down insulates your down comforter sets. In other words, the fill power measures the “fluffiness” of the product. The way to calculate down fill power is to place one ounce of down in a cylinder and to record how much space it occupies. The higher the fill power, the fluffier is the down and the better it traps air, making the down a better insulator, therefore making your comforter warmer. Also, the advantage of a high fill power is that your comforter will be warmer but using less down, therefore weighing less. Fill power ranges from 175 cm³/g (300 in³/oz) (usually with feathers instead of down) to around 900 cm³/g (highest quality down).

July 26th, 2009
Too many consumers make the mistake of disregarding thread count, thinking that down comforter sets are down comforter sets. Let’s find out what thread count is.
Thread counts refers to the actual number of threads found per inch in the fabric. Therefore, a fabric that has a higher thread count will be smoother and silkier to the touch. Not only a higher thread count will make your fabric softer, but it will also act as a natural barrier for the down. The more threads there is, the tighter the space between the threads are and the less down leakage you will have. The tighter weave of high thread count fabrics also acts as natural “down proofing”, keeping down from leaking out. The most luxurious down comforters sets use fabrics that have thread counts as high as 356!
