Here are some tips to help you find your comforter set.
Start with measurements. Measurement are taken to ensure that the quilt will fit the bed in size (American and European models do not have the same standards, sizes may differ from one country to another). It is important to find out ahead whether your comforter will fit your bed because, for hygienic reasons, many businesses refuse to exchange a quilt.
Down comforter sets. Down comforter sets are the most comfortable comforters because down allows a good air circulation and absorbs moisture. If the sleeper sweats, he will remain dry and comfortable. In addition, down comforter sets retain three times more heat per ounce than synthetic products. Because of the elasticity of down comforter sets, you can simply compress the quilt and shake to inflate it again. To judge the quality of down comforter set, check the following:
1) The type of down used in the down comforter sets. Duck down or goose down are the most common. Connoisseurs swear by goose down. The reason for it is that larger birds produce the best down. Hence, adult geese are much larger than ducks. Other down comforter sets use eider down, a specie of a large duck from the North. Eider is an endangered specie, therefore the down is harvested by hand in the nests and sold at a very expensive price. This is why eider down comforter sets are among the most expensive ones (about $2000 for a queen size bed (large). Down comforter sets that are labeled “100% down” on the packaging are most likely not made with goose down or eider down. Because goose down and eider down are more expensive than duck down, manufacturers will make sure to indicate goose or eider it on the labels of down comforter sets.
2) The origin of the down. Down comforter sets made in China are known to be made with the down of young birds, therefore with a much poorer down quality. That down does not inflate and has a low insulation capacity compared to the adult down. Moreover, young birds down filaments can sometimes be fragile quickly break. This is why some goose down comforter sets can cost as little as $150. Opt for down comforter sets made in Europe or Canada, as their quality is is usually better and your down comforter set will last you longer. You can usually find what country down comforter sets come from. If not specified on the packaging of the down comforter set, simply ask the seller.
